Canada Games in Welland
- June 05, 2021
It was part of the summer routine, sign up for sports teams such as baseball, soccer, volleyball and rowing in the summer to help pass the time away from school, make some new friends and learn more about a new sport. It was this summer of 2021 that we, as the Region of Niagara, were supposed to host the Canada Games in August. This has been moved to 2022, and there’s a lot that’s going to be happening.
Welland has a large stadium to host baseball, where the regularly scheduled games are played by Jackfish. Spectators are welcome to most games (once Covid rules are over). Soccer and volleyball are played at the Youngs Insurance Sportsplex on River Road, where you’ll find both indoor and outdoor soccer fields, in addition to being the home of the Welland Tennis Club.
There are two locations for rowers. Most training for rowing is done at the Notre Dame Boat House. They also train at the Welland International Flatwater Centre as there are distance makers, so a great option if practicing speed. Competitions are held further south at the South Niagara Rowing Club.
Welland has held several canoe-kayak championships; and one open water swimming championship as well, right in the same waters you can swim and kayak in on your next vacation. Welland will be hosting baseball, soccer, diving, canoe-kayak, swimming, para-swimming, a triathlon and Special Olympics events specifically at the flatwater centre for the Canada Games.
We are looking forward to you, our guests joining us for these events next August. Consider adding a day or two to your regular August summer getaway, it will be an experience to remember. The athletes are all potential future Olympians.
