Holiday Season is Upon Us

  • December 19, 2020

The holiday season is upon us and we’re not sure exactly how we should feel. Excited at the thought of Christmas, the opportunity to give gifts to those we cherish in our lives?  Disappointed we are not able to all gather around, have a few big laughs and share a big meal? This year will certainly be a year of reflection as we gather in small groups around the dining room table.

The CEO of Best Western Hotels and Resorts, Dave Kong, recently sent a letter to its membership and it was beautiful; let me share a bit of it with you.

“Earlier this week, my three year old granddaughter wanted me to help her write a letter to Santa Claus. I was struck by her incredulous joy and innocence and the firm belief that Santa will come as he always does, and Christmas morning will bring presents, happiness and the magic of the season. For months, she has been looking forward to Christmas, never doubting that it will be a joyous occasion. Through her innocence and happiness, hope and belief, she has uplifted each of us.  She has taught us that even during these very difficult times, we can choose to believe and be hopeful, joyous, and spread love. Seeing her joy is a poignant reminder of the significance of this time of year… In the midst of enormous challenges for some of us, you chose courage over fear, determination over defeat, and joy over sadness.”

I challenge all you readers today to make the best of the situation we are in. To be thankful for what we feel is sometimes to small things, like at least one person by our side, a warm room to eat your meal in, and a phone line to call a friend.

Maybe this is the year to make some new traditions? Post challenge videos over social media amongst rival families members for a bit of fun, or family dinners become more intimate and rotate groups from year to year. Think outside the box, and remember to enjoy the moment.

Merry Christmas, Season’s Greetings, we are thankful for you!
