Kayaking on Welland's River

  • July 11, 2020

As promised, let me tell you about the kayaking experience you can have in Welland, this one you’ll need your own vessel.

This waterway worthy of mention is the Welland River, formerly named "Chippawa Creek" due to the fact that its waters flow right into the Niagara River just above the Canadian Horseshoe Falls and takes a 170 foot plunge into the Lower Niagara River. This River runs adjacent to the Welland "Rec" Canal and is a much smaller body of water. While still in an urban setting, its shores are lined with trees and lots of aquatic plants such as lily pads and bulrush that you would not see on the Recreational Canal.

There are two notable launch locations. One being Merritt Island where there is a small dock. You will have to carry your vessel a short distance to the water. This is a great location if you have children who accompany you on your paddling adventures. There is a great park for the kids to play at whether you are setting up your gear or while you are putting your gear away. There are also restrooms at this location.

The second location at the intersection of River Road and McMaster Ave and this one is a much better launch with on-site parking making your trek from vehicle to shoreline a simple one. This launch spot can be a tad tricky because unlike the Rec Canal, motorboats are in fact allowed the Welland River and it is a more popular launch site.

From either launch, you are able to paddle up to the Aqueduct (this is where the Welland River flows underneath the above mentioned Recreational Canal) or you can head the other direction and go for a longer paddle to the end of the line in Port Robinson. From here, you cannot paddle further. The river system does continue to Niagara Falls. However, at this point The Welland River meets the canal again making this section if the river impossible to pass as paddling across the shipping canal is strictly prohibited.

So, whether you are here for business or pleasure or even if you are a local resident. Welland has something for paddlers of all skill levels no matter the occasion. Be sure to wear your PFD/follow all necessary safety measures and have fun!  Please check city websites for facility usage and limitations due to Covid-19
