Niagara Cycling Route
Every year it seems like more and more guests are travelling with their bicycles, and bringing those bicycles to Niagara

As someone who has travelled with her bicycle in Ontario and to the USA, Welland is a pretty good place to come out and explore. My next favorite places would have to be Windsor and Ottawa (which both have beautiful Best Western hotels).

Welland is a great option for those who don’t like to interact with vehicles while riding.  The 10km route from Welland to Port Colborne is almost all isolated pathways. Once into Port Colborne you need to cross a couple of intersections, and then you’re back on the trail heading East on the Friendship Trail towards Fort Erie, which the Friendship Trail is 16km.  It is completely isolated while riding expect to cross the country roads. There are road safety barriers at every crossing, so if you’re looking for speed, this is not the route for you.  If you don’t mind riding on the road, it’s a lovely ride from Port Colborne onto Lakeshore Road – and on a hot day, you really appreciate the cool breeze off the lake!

Head North from the hotel, and again, you will be on the Canal Trail rarely disturbed be vehicles, not having to worry about missing a turn from Welland all the way up to Lock 7 in Thorold, you’ll ride with the Welland Canal to your right the whole way. This route will also take you about 16km one way.

Explore a little of the Niagara Parkway with your bikes, the southern point from Niagara Falls to Fort Erie is usually quiet, has picturesque large homes on one side and the Niagara River on the other side. Plan this trip cautiously, this area is always windy.

If you like hills, then head North West to Pelham. All road cycling, but you definately have your choice of hills on streets like Sailor's Hill, Centre Street, Metler Road, just to name a few.

A website I find very useful for this region is www.niagaracyclingtourism.com

We hope to see you in your spandex and helmets soon!
