On Road Cycling Route

On road cycling route

If you are reading this you likely already know that cycling is a great solo or group sport that allows you to feel free and explore the area in ways you can’t by car or by foot.

Travelling with a road bike or mountain bike, you may enjoy this on 60km on road bike route I’ve ridding several times. For one, I find there are not a lot of cars, and two, it’s the biking route for the Welland Triathlon Long Course which I have participated in once so far.

Exiting onto the canal path from the hotel, you’ll head south (towards the old train bridge in the distance) which will bring you to a set of lights. Cross the street and stay along the canal. The path will veer left and you’ll go up a tiny hill where you’ll exit the path to the right onto the road and to a street light.  Cross the street, stay on the street until you come to the bike path again on the right hand side.

On the bike path again, the facility on your left is the South Niagara Rowing Club. Their building is not very fancy, but they sure do hold a lot of National Competitions.  At the end of this road you’ll come to a stop sign. On the left will be a road closure, which a bridge once stood…and hopefully will again soon. If you go straight ahead you can ride on the trail for about 10km and ride right into Port Colborne, bringing you up to Lock 8 Park. The tree routes are raising the pathway in some areas and some stone is being pushed aside from ATV trail onto the bike path so be cautious. A great option if you don’t like riding on the road. We’re going to turn right at this stop sign onto Forks Road.

There is no bike lane here, so stay to the right as much as possible, and there may be a few trucks depending on the day of the week. You’ll pass a local radio station on your right, Giant FM and Country 89, and see a sign that welcomes you to Wainfleet.  Once you past Morog Rd, the next one is Feeder Road, where you’ll need to come into the vehicle lane and turn left.

Feeder road is lovely. Bike lane part way, and with little traffic here, but there can be some strong wind gusts on this road. Keep an eye on the river bed for ducks, geese, birds, and turtles basking in the sun on a log. Depending on the season, you’ll also see some lilies on the lily pads.  At the cross street, you can make a snack break for some yummy chocolates at Marshville Chocolates on the right. Township of Wainfleet is on your left. We’ll continue straight until the end of this road.

This road will end at Hutchinson Road, make a left hand turn. There are a few bumps in the road here from past repairs, but still manageable with a road bike, and there is no bike lanes the rest of the way. As you approach the water, you’ll start to feel a dramatic difference in temperate, and usually refreshing!

Once at the end of Hutchinson, make a left hand turn onto Lakeshore. You’ll see a few spots you can safely pull over to the side and enjoy the view and breeze off the water. There are only 2 convenience stores to get some snacks/beverage refuel, one is called Concessions I think, they will be on the left hand side. There is one restaurant, a popular one called DJ’s Road House, but they are only open after 4pm.

You’ll come up to a stop sign at Station Street where you make a left hand turn.  If you were to continue straight, you’d be going into Port Colborne, continuing by the lake, also very nice route if you want to go back this way for a second day.

At the end of Station turn left onto Concession 1, then a right onto Daily Ditch Road.  At the end of Daily Ditch there a home that collects a numbers of things right on the corner, may spot some strange things on that property.

Making a right onto Feeder Road, safely cross the road at Hwy #3 to continue onto Feeder Road. At the end here you’ll turn onto Forks Road where you’ll ride until you reach the bridge that was removed and make a left.

You can ride the trail, or ride on the road, I prefer the road, I find it a lot smoother. Follow this to the main road, passing the Rowing Club on the right side now, where you’ll make a left hand turn onto the main road and stay on the left hand side as you’ll be rejoining the trail again.

That big building on the left with the seats, that the Flat Water Centre, numerous competitions take place here in a variety of sports like rowing, canoe, kayak, dragon boat, triathlon, swimming to name a few. Follow the trail to go around the canal back up to the light to cross the street, staying along the canal and back to the hotel which will be on the left hand side.

A few safety tips to remember, always be on the lookout for cars, wear a helmet, have a red flashing light on the back of your bike, wear sunscreen, bring as much food and water you can carry and of course, have fun!  Lynn
