The 2019 Concerts on the Canal

Concerts on the Canal –

There are some things that we can certainly thank our Government for, and for Welland, one of those “invest in community” initiatives allowed the construction of the Merritt Amphitheatre in Merritt Park on King Street.

Built into the side of the canal bank, the large stones used for seating resemble the stones used for the aqueduct and hold up to 750 people .  The concert area is accessible and smoke free.  On cooler nights, bring a blanket as the stones can be cool on the behind. Don’t forget to bring your sun glasses or baseball hat, the sun will be right in your eyes for a bit as it’s going down as the seating faces West.

Concerts were originally a paid admission, and included about 30 floating pods that were filled with fire wood and lite up during the concert. It was beautiful, however if the wind was coming towards you you’d end up with smoke in your eyes…

Fast forward a few years later, we now have Concerts on the Canal on the floating stage at Merritt Park, with free admission and a collection plate that is passed around prior to the main act performers.  Prior to each act that begins at 7pm, a limited number of food vendors will be there with treats like ice cream, nachos, hot dogs, popcorn, etc.  Just a few steps away you can also grab a bit before the show at one of the downtown restaurants (downtownwelland.ca)

The 2019 concert line up started on June 26th, and runs on various weekends for July & August, ending on the 23rd.  Performance line-up still to play this year include Epic Eagles with Cory Cruise, Material Girls with Katey Gotta, Chicken Fried with Chelsea Crites, Les Rats d’Swompe with Jean Vanier Band.
Did I forget to mention that you can walk to the venue from our place! It’s only 1.5k (18minutes for the average walker!)
See you this summer!
