Welland is Growing into a Destination

  • January 22, 2021

It’s been a couple of months since we’ve posted.  As we begin to change seasons, we start to look ahead at the future of tourism. With the last seven months behind us, what will the next seven look like?

Historically the winter months in our area are quiet. It will likely be even quieter this winter.  There is winter opportunity here for ice fishing, some great dining (even if it is limited seating), or just a few nights in a new environment.  Our guest suites offer stove and fridge with king or queen size beds so pick a few nights, pack up those books you’ve wanted to read all summer with that knitting or crochet project and disconnect.

This year the City of Welland made some big changes thanks to Rotary Club of Welland 100th anniversary, building a portion of the Rotary Park just a few steps from the hotel.  You’ll find the BMX and skate park built a few years ago, and new this year are docks with ladder for swimming, and the relocation of the canoe, kayak, paddle board rentals office and storage facility.  Open from May to September enjoy the Welland canal from the comfort of your rented vessel, or bring your own and launch from the same location. Not one for being on the water? They’ve got some lovely bright yellow lounge chairs for you to watch your family enjoying themselves.

On the books for 2021 is the addition of a swimming block; it’s like a pool within the canal for those who are not comfortable in the deep, open canal, this would be the choice for you. A recent request for proposals indicated it would have sides & a bottom. Currently seeking proposals, we’ll have to wait and see how this turns out.

We’ll gladly approve of the washrooms being added to the area, even if they are portable for now.

Lastly, for those who prefer to be on two wheels, all these amenities are just a few steps from our back door including the Greater Niagara Cycling Trail. Follow the canal trail from the hotel to lock 1 for a 70km adventure, or travel south to Port Colborne for 15km and grab a bit on West Street.  Also many route in between leaving from the hotel, or driving out with your car first then hitting the paths.

We don’t know what the future will hold, but we do know that we will have our place in it. We are looking forward to a fast winter when we can welcome back visitors for your ‘Summer Trip to Welland’
