What about Traditions?

Summer Traditions

“We have to do this, we do it every year!”  “We always do it that way”, and of course the straight forward, “It’s tradition!” Do any of these sound familiar to you?

We’ve heard less and less of this as we move into our second year of a Covid environment that changed the way we were allowed to celebrate and gather with family and friends.

At one time, usually the grandparents or parents, would not let a holiday or special occasion go by without covering the family traditions. This new world has caused us to change those traditions, now is that good or bad? Do we have to look at as good or bad?

Some could argue “bad” because you lose ‘tradition’, you assemble less with family, you let relationships with family dwindle as time goes by with less face to face talks, and more likes, to social posts.  Have you gone the other way and reached out more by telephone and video calls to get that personal connection?

Some others would argue “good” because it allows the younger generation to bring in some new ideas or activities. It can remind us of whom and what is really important in our lives, when we can’t do certainly things – how much do we miss those things? How close did we hold those traditions or people in our hearts?

We have had to change some of our traditions around here to.  For several years each Mothers’ Day we would give out flowers to all our female guests, just as a kind gesture.  It is more difficult to celebrate a staff birthday as lunch breaks are spread out to provide more social distancing.

Summer traditions always seem to be highly rated as memorable, that’s when you don’t have school to worry about, parents usually take more time off from work for family time. Perhaps you rented a cottage, or went camping, good right? Spots are tight this year, consider camping in the backyard?  Ever considered a staycation? Disconnect from the phones and explore your city, might make some surprisingly good memories in the trails, or on the water in the canal.

Whether you think it is good or think it is bad, it is change.  Change can be scary and intimidating. Change can be good and exciting. It is important to go into any situation with an open mind. Ask questions to seek understanding and together, we will all move on to new things, like new traditions, family memories, and exploration of the things around us.

We hope to see you this summer when you make sure new memories during the 'second covid summer'
